Recipe
1. Place crackers flat in a single layer on a disposable cookie sheet with sides (alternate crackers one side up, one side down).
2. Preheat oven to 350° F.
3. Make Caramel:
-
Place butter and sugar in a small saucepan. Heat over high heat to melt butter, while stirring. Bring to a boil.
-
Boil and stir for 3 minutes, until sugar and butter create a smooth, caramel consistency.
4. Remove saucepan from heat and slowly pour caramel over Saltine crackers (as evenly as possible). Be careful as caramel mixture will be HOT!
5. OPTIONAL: If desired, sprinkle chocolate chips over caramel and crackers.
6. Bake for 8 minutes at 350°.
7. OPTIONAL: If chocolate chips are used, once removed from oven, swirl melted chocolate with a spatula to spread across crackers.
8. Refrigerate until cooled and/or hardened.
9. Break apart (can be uneven) and serve or store in an airtight container.
HELPFUL TIPS
-
Get creative with different toppings…. Pretzels, marshmallows, potato chips, M&Ms, fruit, anything you like!
-
You can experiment with adding new toppings before or after baking, depending on the level of meltiness you like or the type of crunch!
-
Caramel is very HOT and sticky. Take care when pouring over crackers as you do not want to burn your skin.
-
When pouring caramel, you can drizzle or use a heavier pour but make sure you cover most, if not all the crackers. Use a spatula or butter knife to spread if needed.
-
You can double recipe for more trays. Add additional boiling time and baking time as needed to reach your desired consistency.
